Yorkshire Rams 41 West Coast Trojans 12
The Rams bounced back from their opening loss to the Newcastle Vikings with a 41-12 win over the West Coast Trojans on Sunday.
The Rams’ running back depth was on show at the John Charles Stadium, with two touchdowns for Keimar Stuart and one apiece from Chris Peel and Amit Singh.
Wide receiver Christian Davies also found the end zone while defensive back Tyler Broad provided the highlight of the match with a 100-yard interception score.
In contrast to last week’s shut-out, the Rams offence were immediately into their stride as a long run by Stuart set up Peel‘s touchdown. When the Trojans’ first drive ended with a Chris Lawton interception returned to the one-yard line, Stuart punched the ball in and the lead was 12-0.
West Coast soon pulled a score back but their cause was harmed when, for the second season running in Leeds, they lost their main receiver Murray Hogg to injury.
Broad added further punishment, intercepting Gary McNey’s pass and returning the ball for a length-of-the-field pick-six, making it 19-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second-year player soon added a second pick and a long punt return in an inspired individual performance, and from the latter the Rams were able to drive into field goal range for a 22-6 half-time lead.
Once more the visitors narrowed the gap but with Davies to the fore, the Rams drove forward again with the receiver’s touchdown catch making it 28-12.
With the Trojans’ small squad rapidly tiring, not helped by a serious-looking injury to star linebacker Tam Chapman, the Rams were able to punch in two more simple scores, Stuart with his second of the game and Singh adding his first for the Rams.
In between times, Broad had a third interception of the day cancelled out by a penalty but Lawton collected his second on a comfortable and much-improved day for the Black and Gold.
